Adios old friend

I like Pluto. I thought everyone liked Pluto. Question is why don't the egghead astronomers like him anymore? Or at least enough to count him as a planet anymore? Just 'cos he's the little guy and he's further away from everyone else is no reason to exclude him. What's next?

hmm, well said serenity. the whole pluto fiasco is a disgrace. i think the exclusion of this little planet just because of his weird orbit is symbolic of oh so much more ...

very sad news. at least pluto has a fellow dwarf planet with which to drown his sorrows...

I count myself as an astronomer/scientist/generally crazy person and am shocked and disappointed by the IAU's decision to demote Pluto as a planet.

This has much more far reaching effects than it's elliptical orbit.

Yes, the Diznee character Pluto was named in dedication to the new planetary discovery, as was the isolation of Plutonium. Who knows how many lunatics named their child Pluto or limited edition soda pop bore the name Pluto.

It is a disgrace!

And what of the astrologers who hitherto took into consideration the effects of Pluto on our daily interactions when assembling our astrological readings?

What now?

Aquarius- Your moon is in conjuction with Mars. Avoid any heated discussions. Pluto is in Gemini but who gives a shit about that little whiney dwarf ass planet? Lighting your farts will have more of an effect!

pluto will *always* be a planet to me! it's orbit is weird but it still goes round the sun. don't know what's with these guys. but as one astronomer put it, there are at least 10,000 astronomers in th world but only 241 voted!

i was recently told that accoding to sanskrit lore, the ninth planet is named such that it's called 'half,' it symbolises half a planet...intriguing...

I had heard something similar to that somewhere.... astronomy lecture back in '98? mythology lectures back in 2000? Don't remember but there was a reference to pluto being less than a planet.

Now how do I explain all this to the students without having my head on the chopping board?
